We Bought a 1979 Argosy Airstream | The Renovation Begins
August 2019. So this happened.
Colin found this 1979 Argosy Airstream in Texas last summer while we were taking on our first travel assignment in Norcal. He flew down in between shifts, and drove this thing back up North with the intentions of doing some little modifications and cleaning until we could get it home (Los Angeles). I don’t think we actually talked too much about trailer life. But one day he brought it up and it didn’t sound like the craziest idea in the world. We had just started doing travel nursing and thought it would be such an awesome way to explore the country. And we are definitely not ready to settle down and have a normal life. So when the right deal came along, we jumped on it. Even though we weren’t necessarily ready to start renovating it, we had it. I met Colin in San Diego at one of our favorite beach camping spots on his drive back with the trailer and we had our first getaway in it right away!
The Beginning
Colin’s Dad is a carpenter, with a little shop out of his garage. We had been planning to do the heavy lifting part of the renovation there in LA at his parents house. The driveway was occupied with a few other projects: Colin’s old Surf Van (which we are currently turning into a photo booth!) and Mr. Davis’ old Scout. So the space wasn’t available for our latest project. We ended up having to store if for the next 6 months.
We originally wanted to do all the work ourselves, but since we’re running a couple of businesses plus working our evenings in the hospital, we just don’t have the time to be 100% involved. We’ve got this thing at a mechanic right now. We’re having the electric and gas done by a professional.
The Before Photos
The last owner started his own floor plan for weekend camping trips. Our plan is to live it on short term assignments and traveling, so we’re going to need to move some things around. We did some cleaning but still have a lot to rip out. All the frame work that’s in there now will have to come out and we’ll start from scratch. Now to finalize our new floor plan design.
