Capturing the Perfect Wave: A Guide to Surf Lifestyle and Couple's Surf Sessions
As a surf photographer, capturing the perfect wave is what it's all about. Whether you're shooting a surf lifestyle session or a couple's surf session, there are a few key things you need to keep in mind to ensure that you get the best shots possible. In this blog post, we'll cover everything you need to know to become an expert surf photographer for surf lifestyle and couple's surf sessions.
Know Your Gear: To capture the perfect wave, you need to have the right gear. Make sure you have a camera that can shoot in fast motion and has a high shutter speed to freeze the action. Also, consider investing in a telephoto lens to capture shots from a distance and a waterproof housing to protect your camera from the water, or even a drone. We like to use our drone for these shots so we can create an image that brings us right to the surfers as they are experiencing the waves.
Scout the Location: Before the shoot, scout out the location to find the best spots for shooting. Look for areas where the waves are breaking and where surfers tend to congregate. This will give you a better chance of getting the perfect shot.
Build a Relationship with Your Subjects: When shooting surf lifestyle and couple's surf sessions, it's important to build a relationship with your subjects, as with any type of photography session. This will help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera and allow you to capture more authentic and natural shots. I believe the relationship starts the minute an inquiry comes through. I focus on sharing expectations for the session and prepare the clients as much as possible beforehand, so they can just have a great time in the water and leave the technical stuff to me.
Understand the Light: Light is crucial when shooting surf sessions. Try to schedule your shoots during the golden hours when the light is soft and warm. This will create a beautiful and flattering light that will enhance your shots. Don’t be afraid to work into dark hours to capture something a little more moody.
Experiment with Angles: To capture unique and dynamic shots, experiment with different angles. Shoot from a low angle to capture the power of the wave or from above to showcase the beauty of the ocean. Also, consider shooting from the water to capture the action up close.
Edit with a Light Hand: When editing your shots, it's important to keep things natural and authentic. Avoid over-editing or heavily filtering your shots. Instead, focus on enhancing the colors and contrast to bring out the best in your images.
By following these tips, you can establish yourself as an expert surf photographer for surf lifestyle and couple's surf sessions. With your skills, you can capture the beauty and excitement of surfing, and create images that will be cherished for a lifetime.
