Traveling and Photography: A Match Made in Heaven
As a mom of a toddler, I love traveling and exploring new places with my family. And as a photographer who specializes in interior and lifestyle photography, I know that these adventures present endless opportunities for capturing beautiful, meaningful moments through my camera lens.
Here are some of my top tips for taking great travel photos:
Plan ahead: This may be a “duh” moment for you, but I’m so spontaneous and I used to love traveling freely (before kids, yes) and stumbling into experiences. This is so not the case now that we are traveling and sightseeing with a toddler. So, before you hit the road, do some research on the places you'll be visiting. Look up the most photogenic spots, including natural landscapes, historic landmarks, and local hangouts. This will help you map out your itinerary and prioritize the best photo opportunities.
Pack the right gear: When you're traveling, you don't want to be weighed down by too much equipment, but you also want to have everything you need to capture great shots. I recommend bringing a versatile camera, such as a mirrorless camera or DSLR, along with a few lenses (such as a wide-angle lens for landscapes and a portrait lens for people shots), a tripod, and plenty of batteries and memory cards.
Get up early: One of the best times to capture beautiful travel photos is early in the morning, when the light is soft and the crowds are still asleep. We have explored a few cities (Oslo Norway being one of my favorites) while the majority of the city was still sleeping, and it was hands downs so much easier to see what we wanted to because there was no waiting in lines first thing in the mornings. Wake up before sunrise (or as early as your schedule allows) and head to a popular spot to get the best shots without the distractions of other tourists.
Capture the local culture: While you're traveling, make an effort to immerse yourself in the local culture and capture the essence of the place you're visiting. Take photos of street scenes, local markets, and people going about their daily lives. This will help you tell a more complete story of your travels.
Experiment with angles and perspectives: Don't be afraid to get creative with your shots. Try shooting from different angles and perspectives, such as getting down low to capture a child's eye view, or shooting from above to show the vastness of a landscape.
By following these tips, you will definitely capture amazing travel photos that will transport you back to those special moments for years to come. And as a mom who is really experiencing how fleeting time is, I know that these memories are priceless.
