Midcentury Surf Bedroom Transformation

This one means a lot because this is our room transformation. You know how your personal space sometimes turns into the last space you spend time on because no one else sees it? That’s what happened with our bedroom for the last dare I say 6 years? Yikes.

Our Why

This last year we started working almost completely from home. That was the single most motivating factor that pushed me to complete our master bedroom refresh. We are spending way more time in our bedroom since our office space is also in this room. So I reached out to Staged By Ana Egger and had her help me take this room to the finish line.

Since my husband surfs and we’ve had a stack of surfboards in our room ever since I’ve known him, I wanted to make the beachy element come alive (we can walk to the beach, so it makes sense right?). The idea was to make the room look less like surf board storage and more like a meaningful, midcentury surf bedroom getaway. I had already purchased my bed frame a couple years ago and we also had the nightstands from several months back. I wasn’t ready to completely start from scratch, so it was important to me to work with some of our main staples in the room and elevate from there.

  • The dresser was our biggest purchase for our master bedroom revamp. We bought it from Crate and Barrel and it is actually a kids dresser. The dimensions are smaller all around but we mostly appreciate that its more narrow, since our space is limited in the room and allowed for a little more breathing room for the walkthrough at the foot of our bed. It completely fits out vibe for our surf master makeover and it’ll be perfect to pass down to Indie when we move into a bigger place. The double function really made me happy. And I wasn’t sure if I wanted a white dresser. The testing it out phase was perfect for me and I’ve ended up loving it anyways.

  • This one has been with us for a few years. You can find similar ones everywhere. Wayfair has the bedrame for less than $450. There’s so many more modern beds out there now, and I wanted to updated it so much. But it works. So I’ll be happy with it for a few more years. Or so I tell my husband.

  • I love how these look in our room! I found these sconces on Etsy. The seller has so many beautiful variations with the modern, midcentury look I wanted. I was looking for a plugin sconces since we only had outlets to work with. All of this seller’s lights can be made custom to a hard-wired pull chain or plug in, like I needed.

  • One thing I love about Colin: he’s so crafty! He made this custom surf rack to fit the dimensions in our room. I’ve seen similar minimal surf racks on Etsy if you’re looking for something kind of life ours.

  • Wayfair is such a hit or miss. These white, midcentury, small nightstands are a classic Wayfair experience. The assembly is what’s killer. One turned out great, the other is kinda wonky. Order at your own risk.

  • This may be one of my favorite things that so easily transformed the room. We found this one on Wayfair. The Chris Loves Julia rugs are hands down my favorite. This is my second rug in this line and I’m still loving it! My husband had one request for the rug: must be soft. I wouldn’t say its super soft, but it’s not scratchy. That’s a win for me.

  • The large print over the bed is one of my own images from Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. I have other few other prints on my Etsy Shop you can check out if you’re looking for travel inspired photography prints to style your home. I want to be more purposeful with the decor I bring into our home, and printing photos from our trips around the world has been the best way to bring those memories back to live with us.

The nighstand decor is mostly from Amazon home (who knew how cute the stuff is there now!) and Anthropolgie is to thank for the incredible candle sticks on the dresser. I am in love with these statement candles pieces!

  • We have an odd shaped room and have had a few different desks from Home Goods that moved from corner to corner within the bedroom. But we finally decided that the desk situation just had to go under the window to make sense in our room and separate the “office space” from the bed and bedroom essentials. We needed it to be fairly large since Colin and I both work from home now. So we made it custom. The lower cabinets are IKEA and the wood desk top is a piece we had in our 1969 Argosy Airstream that didn’t get used. Colin did his thang, and we probably made it a little larger than it needed to be, but it MADE our office. And I love it so much.
